In a galaxy further away than usual

[personal profile] swarm_embrace 2021-02-18 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
The silence in the back of her mind was deafening. The utter nothingness where she'd grown accustomed to the background buzzing of billions of Zerg, and the Swarm Queens who commanded billions more. The rock she was trapped on had nothing truly interesting beyond the ruins she arrived in. Ancient, old enough to have been Xel'naga, but not quite right for them.

Day after day she explored the jungle, further expanding her knowledge of her surroundings and occasionally circling back to the ruins. Most of her attention was turned outward, though, there was no civilization she could detect even in her considerable psychic range. Individuals or even a ship full of beings could easily escape her notice but she wasn't desperate enough to begin a massive telepathic broadcast.

A ship arrived a few months-worth of the planet's solar cycle, and she made her way to it. Unfortunately, the group spoke in a language she didn't understand, their memories revealed a recent space battle with a much larger ship, which explained the hull damage she could see.

Equally unfortunate, they decided to pick a fight with her. Their energy weapons were considerably more painful than simple Terran small-arms bullets, she wasn't going to risk them possessing something that could seriously injure or incapacitate her. The last survive Kerrigan saved long enough to rifle through his memories further. Other ships, other aliens. More sapient species than she had ever guessed existed.

If the ship had been fully functional, it was likely she could have eventually figured out how to fly it without blowing it, or herself, up. But the damage had apparently forced an emergency landing, and it was beyond her limited and somewhat out of date mechanical knowledge to repair.

It wasn't too long after she left the ship behind, having decided to take a few of its weapons and what seemed like communications gear, when a much larger ship appeared in the sky.

Kerrigan had foregone lightning and using telekinesis to crush enemies in favor of close combat. Punctures and slashes from the deadly limbs growing from her lower back and claw wounds were less definitive than psionic energy and crushing. Rather than go for the ruins she'd been using as her base, Kerrigan redirected for more difficult terrain. Rocky and overgrown, difficult for humans and similar species to traverse without making enough noise that they'd be obvious. She hadn't made any attempt to hide her tracks, expecting people to rely more on sensors and scanners than visual clues or even scent.

She wasn't completely opposed to making contact with her current best chance of getting off the uninhabited, overgrown rock, but neither was she eager to get into a fight with people who would be better armed and better-disciplined than a handful of criminals. People who could pose a real threat to her without a safe place to regenerate and recover if she was severely injured.

Eventually she got the communication equipment working, listening only and trying to find what frequency was being used by the people who came down on the shuttle. It wouldn't help her much if they were using even basic encryption, but locating the proper frequency would allow her to start adapting to reach for it with her mind.

Without knowing how easily their technology could detect her, she wasn't interested in trying to approach the main group closely enough to read their minds. Most people would think patience went against the Zerg strategy, but proper timing just as important for the Swarm as it was for anyone else.

It didn't take long for Kerrigan to be located, but she didn't hear enough noise for it too be too large a group. Reaching out, she felt only a pair of minds, one human, and one not.

She left behind most of her stolen equipment, keeping only one of the energy rifles she found similar enough in its construction to familiar weapons. Now it was time to make contact, but Kerrigan wanted to speak before they saw her. Even if they didn't know what the Zerg were, her appearance didn't exactly invite diplomacy.

Kerrigan waited, she had the high ground and plenty of cover from the large rocks in the area. Once they were close enough for conversation with only a little bit of raised voices rather than needing to shout, she called out. "That's close enough," Kerrigan ordered, careful to speak only with her voice and not telepathically at the same time. She remained by one of the larger clusters of boulders for the moment, unable to see or be seen by those approaching.

Grand Admiral. Higher than a full Admiral, implying either a need to give out inflated titles our a force large enough that it was necessary to have a rank between full Admiral and whoever was at the very top. Strange that he was out here in person instead of simply allowing his men to do their job, but not unheard of. Kerrigan was well-acquainted with several hands-on types in high ranking positions, even without counting herself in that group.

"You're not going to hold a little self defense against me, are you? They were far less willing to talk than you are, Admiral." Kerrigan said with a hint of dry humor in her voice. "Since you've been so polite as to introduce yourself, I am Kerrigan."

She didn't reveal herself, instead remaining in the relative safety of her position. If the Admiral really cared to, he could bring enough forces to bear to be a real threat to her. Her best option was to play it slow and cautious. The fact that she was dealing with likely the highest ranking officer in his force for at least the range of several star system boded well for not only her survival, but her chances of getting off the planet.

Right to the question Kerrigan least wanted to answer.

"I'm searching for something that isn't here, and now I'm stranded. That pirate ship is in no shape to fly without repairs I can't make on this planet, though it seems I lucked out in not trying to fly off with it." Kerrigan could easily picture how much worse this encounter would go if she'd been caught in a damage ship being chased.

She's not in any particular hurry to leave, there's nothing pressing back home that won't keep for a few months or a few years. Zagara can handle everything in her absence. But she does want to get off this rock, and right now there's an opportunity, even if she'll have to gain it through diplomacy. Not her worst talent, but neither it is her best.

[personal profile] swarm_embrace 2021-02-24 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
It was nice to have confirmation that the ship in the pirates' memories was indeed the one currently in orbit.

"No. I will continue my search elsewhere." Eventually. Her tone indicated that she was confident in its inevitability. Either because she had a plan or because she really could afford to wait however long it took.

It didn't particularly matter if she left behind a sign for the Zerg to know where she went. Knowing that she was here at all point would be enough as long as she could manage to come within telepathic range of this place periodically. If the Zerg infested this planet, she would eventually find out about it.

"I'm stepping out now." They had been talking enough that Kerrigan was confident she wouldn't be shot, and that her appearance wouldn't hinder negotiations. The alien commander's mind was slippery, thinking in patterns that were difficult to grasp without trying to go deeper, and she was wary of doing more than passive telepathic senses in case he had enough ESP to sense an attempt. But even then, she was confident in her assessment of him.

Kerrigan kept her bladed limbs folded up behind her instead of spread out as she would if she were getting ready to attack or if she wanted to show obvious aggression. The pointed, powerful claw at the wrist joint curled downward loosely but still coming up over her head even in their lowered position and the long bladed tips of the limbs nearly touching the ground.

Having a calm discussion in person with someone who wasn't Zerg felt strange after so long. Especially without the simmering undercurrent of fear or anger that usually met her from even friendly Terrans or Protoss. His offer of mutual aid was a welcome one, but it still did bring up some questions.

"What aid do you believe I can offer you, Admiral?" If they were familiar with her abilities and position, the offer would be more clear. Thrawn almost certainly knew nothing about her beyond what he'd learned from this meeting and from the small fight she'd had with the pirates.

Kerrigan did move a little closer as they spoke, but remained outside of melee range for even the extended reach of the limbs on her back. Not out of concern for her own safety; the energy weapon shot to the thick carapace on her upper torso had healed completely, leaving only a slight discoloration that could have easily been dirt or a bruise. After months on a deserted planet and a recent melee fight she was hardly clean, with the pirates' blood drying on her long claws, as well as on the lower tips of the limbs on her back.

Anders~

[personal profile] catarmy 2021-03-23 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
They'd been prowling the streets for a little while, varying between hightown and lowtown, but never lingering long. The fish could be good when prepped over a hot stove some days more than when it was caught straight from the shore.

Getting wet wasn't part of the agreement, they thought. It certainly wasn't supposed to suddenly downpour while they were just leaving the Hanged Man after begging for scraps around the alleyways.

Shaking out their fur with a dismayed yowl, they fold their ears back with an internal grimace. Ugh.

Walking between the buildings while clinging to places with a significant overhang, they follow the darker paths towards somewhere - hopefully - warmer. Darktown might be one, admittedly. The docks always struck them as a bit chaotic following more extreme weather, but there was bound to be a fire or two in Kirkwall's underbelly.

It would, however, be dangerous for anyone ordinary.

Good thing this calico isn't remotely ordinary. There's just value in pretending to be.

Still, there's no problem with kicking up a fuss at this horrendous weather; they yowl and mewl on their way, hoping to attract some kind soul to let them indoors by a fire. The water doesn't make their fur look pretty anymore, but perhaps that's just the price of pretending to be pitiable....

[personal profile] rebelhealer 2021-03-23 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Anders honestly thought he could beat the rain back to Darktown, but no such luck. He'd been out gathering elfroot and other ingredients, and the next thing he knows, it's a downpour. He has a safe house in Lowtown that he can take refuge in, and it hasn't been compromised yet, so he heads that way.

He's close to the house before he hears the pitiful noises. Of course he can't help but look. Upon seeing the source of the noise, he immediately kneels down, "You poor thing! Come here." He reaches into his pouch and pulls out a piece of fish jerky, hoping the lure the cat over.

[personal profile] catarmy 2021-03-23 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Food! Even in the rain, they can appreciate the offering. Success again!

Shaking their fur out again, they lean in to inspect the food, sniffing while observing the human before them. Hmmm, seems to lack suspicion...

They take a nibble on the jerky and tug on it, trying to take the entire thing, vibrant mismatched eyes watching without blinking as their whiskers pull forward.

Jerky isn't too bad. A bit more chewy, but the flavor's just right. Would be easier to eat if they were in human form, but oh well.

Regardless of whether or not Anders wants to give up the entire piece, they make their appreciation known by rubbing against his boot and chirping, short tail swaying happily.

"There's plenty more where that came from." Anders lets the cat have the entire bit of jerky, before he carefully picks the cat up and tucks them into his coat, so they can share his body heat.

He picks up the pace as he makes his way to the safe house. As he steps inside, he keeps the cat tucked into his coat as he puts down his pack and uses magic to light a fire. With the fireplace going, he finally takes the cat out and sets them down in front of the fire.

"You wait there." Anders retreats into the tiny wash room and returns with a towel, kneeling back down so he can dry the cat off.

They squeak a little as they're picked up, but don't use their claws at all. The body heat feels pretty damn nice even if their fur makes that difficult to reach the skin at first. Once they're in a safer and warm place, they shake their fur out a few times by the fire, contemplating the pros and cons of licking it flat while it's still wet.

It's a little surprising to be doted on further, but they chirp and purr into the attention, leaning into the towel as Anders helps dry them off.

So this person is a mage. Not bad company to keep, honestly. Raine decides that this person doesn't look like one fresh from leaving a Circle. Especially given the look of his robes.

With some wiggling, they poke their head out from under the towel and happily make rolling chirping noises. Good thing they're not that big, and their fur is only medium-length.

"Prrrt!"

The cat doesn't seem feral. Perhaps they're a stray, or they have an owner somewhere who is worried about them. Anders hasn't seen a tag on them or any indication that they're owned, but still. "There we go," Anders towels off their little face last, before going to hang the towel on the sink to clean later.

He then gets a saucer and pours a little bit of goat's milk into it, sliding it towards the cat. "You're welcome to stay until the rain stops."
catarmy: (catte)

[personal profile] catarmy 2021-03-24 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! That smells good. But they make sure to look up when Anders says "rain" and tilt their head. A good way as any to convey that they have that as a name.

"PrrRrrt?"

Ears forward, tail swishing thoughtfully, they wait for a moment for any sign of further inquiry, even though it probably won't come.

Even though the milk is very, very tempting. But names are important, and Raine has standards!
rebelhealer: (smirk)

[personal profile] rebelhealer 2021-03-24 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
They reacted when he said 'rain'. Sir Pounce-a-lot would turn to look at him and swish his tail when Anders addressed him by name. "Rain? Is that your name?"

Then this cat probably belongs to someone. Or they're a frequent visitor to some place where the locals gave them that name. Either way, it wouldn't be fair to take the cat with him and keep them all to himself.

They wiggle, bodily, pointedly when he says their name again, an ear flicking a few times to loose some stray droplets of water that were missed. After a moment, they stretch and look to the milk, taking a moment to drink.

It's good. A nice balm considering the rainy day.

They don't drink all of it yet, instead opting to continue to be in the space of their temporary caretaker. One good turn deserves something in kind, after all.

They paw at his boot, and then half-roll onto it, stretching out on their back and exposing their belly. Do they care if they get a bit of dirt on their fur? Nope. Not right now when being cute is something they can do!

Unlike the brown coloration of their back, their belly is mostly white and spotted with gray.

"Mmrrp?"
rebelhealer: (Default)

[personal profile] rebelhealer 2021-03-24 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Is this cat really inviting him to rub their belly? Did he die and go to the Maker's side? Anders accepts the invitation, gently scratching the cat with his fingers and petting them. "Who's a pretty kitty? You are!" He can't help but slip into that baby talk voice. "You are so sweet. Yes you are."
catarmy: (catte)

[personal profile] catarmy 2021-03-24 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh!! Oh yes, that's some knowledgeable petting! Raine purrs happily, going limp with their paws still stretched over their head, tail wiggling rapidly.

It's nice. It's really nice. Their thoughts go to mush before long, just reveling in every little pet and scratch. Baby talk aside. Not that it's a bad sound - it actually is easier to hear than a lower pitch in this form.

They'll just stay like this for however long the human wants to pet their belly. It's just that nice. Hmm, and here they thought that this would be repayment enough, but... they might have to do something more than this.

Humans don't view cats bringing prey to them the same way. Maybe... safeguarding this human while he sleeps will suffice? Yes. Tonight, they can set traps with their shadows to snag any aggressive-minded people.

For now? Pets.
rebelhealer: (smirk)

[personal profile] rebelhealer 2021-03-24 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Anders continues to give the cat scratches, and even uses his other hand to play with their little toes. "You're a good cat, aren't you?" Much as he would love to just keep petting this cat all night, Anders's is beginning to feel sleepy. He reluctantly takes his hands off the cat.

"Well, go ahead and enjoy the rest of your milk." Standing back up, he starts removing some of his clothes so he can get ready for bed. He's not planning to strip down completely, but rather down to his pants and the long shirt.
